General Information
Economics, in its simplest definition, is a social science that examines the policies ensuring the production of necessary goods and services, and their distribution in a manner that maximizes social welfare, by utilizing scarce resources in the most efficient way to meet unlimited human needs. At the micro level, the science of economics analyzes the effects of household and firm decisions regarding production and consumption in terms of cost, profit, employment, and productivity. At the macro level, it focuses on analyzing the impacts of fiscal and monetary policies at both national and international dimensions, aiming to address issues such as inflation, income inequality, unemployment, low growth, and poverty. A comprehensive and multifaceted economics education is essential for accurately analyzing national and international production and distribution mechanisms, which have undergone profound transformations in line with the global economy, the technological revolution, and the associated advances in information and communication.
The objective of the Department of Economics at Çankaya University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, is to equip students with the ability to understand and interpret current economic phenomena and to analyze them at both theoretical and empirical levels. At the core of the program lies the goal of providing students with the perspective necessary to correctly analyze economic developments at national and global scales, while also teaching them the tools required for such analyses. Graduates of the program pursue careers in public institutions, international organizations, and the private sector. Moreover, some of our alumni continue their academic careers in graduate programs at leading universities in Turkey and around the world.
The curriculum is structured under three main categories. The first group consists of service courses that students in the department are required to take. Among these are compulsory courses such as English, mathematics, accounting, law, and computer applications. The second group comprises core economics courses, including microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, monetary and fiscal policies, and international economics theory. The third group is composed of specialized courses that serve as an initial step toward expertise in different fields of economics. Examples include financial economics, growth and development, health economics, environmental economics, and the economics of education.
Our students also benefit from a wide range of Double Major and Minor opportunities in other fields offered by Cankaya University. In addition, within the framework of the Erasmus Student Exchange Program, they are provided the opportunity to study for up to one academic year at partner universities in European Union member countries. Furthermore, students interested in undertaking internships at public or private sector institutions are encouraged and guided in line with their areas of interest.
The Department also supports students’ extracurricular activities and encourages them to engage in the diverse student clubs of the University. One such organization, the Çankaya University Economics Society, contributes to students’ personal development by organizing academic and social activities. The society not only undertakes various social responsibility projects but also hosts seminars by inviting distinguished economists and accomplished professionals to the University.
The Department of Economics at Çankaya University, with its distinguished academic staff composed of prominent scholars in their fields, aims to cultivate young economists equipped to compete globally.
